VFX Apprentice Course - Whispy Boom

The second 3D effect from the VFX Apprentice course: A whispy boom. The main textures were hand-painted in Krita. The environmental textures (ground, stonewall) are from the course project. I created only the VFX.

My final whispy boom. Below you can see the original course goal and that I deviated a bit with my interpretation.

I added a radial force in my concept and a longer buildup in my final vfx.

The smoke nova has a complex movement which is created by layering several simple distortions on top of eachother.

Here you see the most important points about my main material.

At the beginning I was faking the slice with a pre-cut mesh but thanks to Niels Dewitte (Wyvery) I looked into the builtin slicing function from Unreal and now the meshes are correctly and proceduraly cut! I linked a tutorial in the project description.

I worked a long time on this effect and here you see some WIP steps. For more information you can visit the WIP Thread (see project description).

This is the most important texture and it was the first step during the course to paint it. I've used the stretched versions to have less noise.
